i want a dslr cam…

Well, what is a dslr? dslr stands for digital single lens reflex…Hmm…some Phy B light terms coming into play now.. So, parallel light rays from a distant/infinity, travel through a convex lens and are converge to a mirror which reflect upwards into a prism called pentaprism…Light is totally internally reflected and travel to the viewfinder.. Concept is rather simple huh? So when you take a shot, the mirror will flip upwards and the light rays will focus to a single point as the shutter (blue) opens that exposes the digital sensor (red) to light..

Why dslr? It’s just so damn bloody cool…. Played with my friend’s Nikon D40 when we were at klcc and at stadium putra for the showdown of champions [will blog about that later, probably]….  Not just that, it takes super sharp and clear photos…and btw, you see professional photographers using dslr and not some wussy campact digital camera with like 10 MP…

So I’ve shortlisted the dslr that i think is suitable for me and is in the ‘price range’…

-Nikon D60 @ RM 2,288 released 29-01-08
Key features :10.2 megapixels, dust control, small and light

- Olympus E420 @ RM2,499 released May 2008
[E420 TLK (ZUIKO DIGITAL ED 14-42mm F3.5-5.6 & ZUIKO DIGITAL ED 40-150mm F4.0-5.6) ]
Key features :10 megapixels, dust control, face detection, expanded dynamic range

- Canon Rebel XS (D1000) @ RM1,999 released August 2008
Key features :10 megapixels, dust control, live view

Hmmm… I really do not know… So far, I’ve seen plenty of people using Nikon dslr..I see that common black and yellow camera strap everywhere during the exhibition in kl… If I were to get one, probably I’ll get olympus but olympus dslr isn’t that popular huh? why olympus? for 2.5K, you’ll get 2 lenses…

after all this research, the question that pops up in my head is, “Do I really need a dslr camera? “

i wouldnt recommend sony. there is a reason why the market is dominated by nikon and canon.

if you’re really interested in taking pictures, go for a dslr. but if you want more flexibility, go for a prosumer range like the canon G10 or lx3. the picture quality of these cameras almost match up to dslrs. and you wont need to worry about changing lens.

if you really want an slr, go for the canon 450D or D60. 1000D also not too bad. haha

    good luck

oh man.. never sony.. canon 40d all the way man… will never go wrong with that!!

or like ashleigh mentioned, won’t really go wrong starting off with a prosumer too.. but the G series tend to be quite overpriced..

I’d get the cheapest body you can stand and the nicest lense that you can afford. The great secret to all these cameras is that the lense makes all the difference. A US$600 camera attached to a $50 lenses makes no sense, but that is what most people get.

It is why a 15 megapixel compact camera looks absolutely terrible compared with a 6MP dSLR with a great lense on it. See http://tongfamily.com/art for some samples. most were done with an 8 megapixel camera.

I can’t tell your price range, but I’m gussing since you are looking at dSLRs like the d60, it is about $700. In that case, I’d recommend the d40x or the Rebel XS and then get a good lense. BTW, the superzooms that are 11x similarly give up a lot.

Nikon and Canon are basically identical (I’ve owned both), so it is literally a preference thing. They are both amazing equipment. Canon had lots of share early on and Nikon has come back to be the winner thus far, but Canon is coming back. So it is back and forth:

So I’d get the XS plus:

Canon EF-S 17-85mm f/4-5.6 IS USM which is about $400. It is a very good lense and way, way better than the stock 18-55mm

if you could afford it the Canon 18-200. It is $1K I realize but it is an amazing quality product that will live in your hands forever. see http://the-digital-picture.com for the best reviews of canon.

The Nikon is about equivalent, the d40x and then check out http://nikonians.com
